A study by the British Council shows that a lack of information is one of the main reasons why students are not spending time overseas as part of their studies. The survey of more than 2,000 students found that although they believed that spending time in another country would open more doors in the job market they were being put off by perceived barriers including language ability and cost.

The majority of respondents admitted that their degree, by itself, was not enough to ensure that they got the job they wanted after university.

Nearly all of those who said they would be spending time overseas as part of their studies said it would help them to secure a job and well over half who said they did not plan to spend time in another country admitted that it might make them more attractive to employers.

Dr Jo Beall, director of education and society at the British Council, said the research had been useful in explaining why so many students in the UK are not taking advantage of the opportunity to study abroad.

He added that it was important for young people to gain international experience as it is highly valued by employers. A new website is being set up by the British Council that will offer information on subjects including visas, healthcare and obtaining funding.
