Canada introduces new visa for young workers

The Canadian government has introduced a new visa scheme that gives young people the chance to live and work in the country before deciding whether they would like to make a more permanent move. The International Experience Class visa has been created by the merger of the International Exchange Programme and the International Youth Programme.

In order to qualify, young applicants need to be citizens of a country that currently has a bilateral agreement with Canada for youth mobility. Some agreements require an applicant to do so through a Canadian visa office situated in their country of residence and others require applicants to be living in their country of origin.

Most IEC programmes are designed to give young people the chance to apply for permanent residence if they decide they would like to stay on beyond the expiration of their visa. Work permits are usually issued for 12 months.

In order to apply for permanent residency in Canada it is necessary to prove that a person has been in full-time employment for at least one year.

The advantage of IECs is that they allow people the time to experience what it is like to live and work in Canada in real time outside their own country in a way that is not necessarily experienced by people who visit the country to travel.
