Chris Bowen, the Australian immigration and citizenship minister, has announced measures which will assist Australian employers in finding skilled US workers to fill shortages within key sectors, reported workpermit.com.

The new measures will ensure that skills assessments are processed much quicker. The hope is to attract more American electricians, construction workers and plumbers to immigrate to Australia. In addition, the new measures would allow US workers in licensed positions, like plumbers and electricians, to be granted immediate access to provisional licences upon arrival in Australia.

The quicker skills assessment process will ensure that Australian employers can make sure that workers from the US meet their requirements in a much shorter period of time. Currently, skilled US workers must be assessed in Australia, and this can lead to months of waiting between entry and starting work.

However, under the new assessment process, likely to be implemented later in April, workers from the US will be assessed against the Australian regulatory requirements before entering Australia, ensuring applicants are sure they are able to work in their particular field upon arrival.

The Australian Immigration department said that such assessments are offered in other countries, so it is logical that Australia introduces them in the US because of its potential supply of employees and the interest of employers in Australia.
