Australian embassy condemns website ad

An online job advertisement which stated “no Irish” should apply has resulted in the Australian embassy in Ireland having to defend the country’s commitment towards diversity and racial tolerance.

The advertisement, posted on the Gumtree website, stated that a bricklayer was needed ASAP, offered a salary of $250 per day and said no Irish or part-time workers should apply. The Irish Independent reported the advertisement, which sparked immediate outrage as the newspaper described the ad as being reminiscent of the discrimination which was seen in British cities against the Irish in the 1950s.

The advertisement has now been removed, but the man responsible for it defended himself by saying he was sick of the Irish applying for positions that they did not have the qualifications for. He explained that he was very busy and didn’t have enough time to watch over them; however, he added that he had no problem with Irish people.

An Australian embassy spokesman said that his country’s government is completely committed to Australia being multi-cultural and greatly welcomes any contribution made by people from all backgrounds, regardless of gender, colour or origin to Australia’s society, culture and prosperity. He added that Australia did not tolerate racism or discrimination, which was reflected in a range of anti-discrimination legislation.
