Bigger numbers have led a flow-on for skilled migration and work visas.

India provides the most new international students to New Zealand as well as the second largest amount of skilled migrants, found a report by the Department of Labour. In 2011, 13 per cent of all skilled migrants to the country were from India, a rise of eight per cent from the year before, with almost 10,500 arriving, reported the New Zealand Herald.

China remains the largest source nation for international students, who are regarded as important skilled migrants with the global economic slowdown impacting migration numbers. India has taken the place of South Africa as New Zealand’s second largest skilled migrant source.%
The net migration in 2011 was 3,900, the lowest figure since 2000/01, while the 40,737 permanent migrants were unable to meet the target of 45,000 to 50,000 places.

The report said that the decrease reflects how the recession has impacted migration opportunities, in particular skilled migration, in addition to disruptions after the earthquake in Canterbury on 22 February. It went on to state that there have been fewer jobs and the lower amount of skilled temporary workers is still impacting skilled permanent migration.

The largest source nation for migrants to New Zealand was the UK with 16 per cent. That was followed by China, India and South Africa with 13, per cent, 10 per cent and eight per cent respectively. There was also an increase in the net loss of New Zealanders to Australia from 16,700 two years ago to 30,500 last year.
