Australian immigration rules to change in July

Engineers who are looking to move to Australia to fill lucrative positions should consider applying before 1 July this year in order to be ahead of a change of rules in the General Skilled Migration Programme. Australia currently has a need for qualified mining engineers. Graduates in the profession can expect to earn in the region of $100,000 per year.

However, in order to get a job in the country applicants will be expected to pass an occupation skills test, an immigration points test and the basic skills required for the GSM programme. On 1 July this year the system will feature significant changes which will make it more difficult for those wanting to enter Australia.

Processing times are expected to be longer and fewer people will qualify. Before submitting an immigration application, those wanting to work in Australia also have to pass an English language test. The GSM system applies to jobs which need to be filled in the country and to people who are not currently being sponsored by an employer.

The Skilled Occupation List for engineers includes structural, civil, mechanical and electrical engineers as well as engineering managers. Those considering applying for a position should be able to prove that they have a degree which is at least equal to a bachelors. Some employers may ask for proof of experience on the job.

Before emigrating down under, the relevant assessment authority has to be contacted. For engineers this is Engineers Australia.
