Australia’s Defence Force is in a drive to try and recruit laid-off military staff from the UK to fill their quota. Preferential treatment for immigration and citizenship rules will be given to those chosen.

With 5,000 Royal Navy sailors set to lose their posts over the next few years in the UK, the Australian Navy has sent a representative to the country in order to take advantage of the situation. The Australian military is also looking for engineers, as many have been tempted to move into the country’s mining industry which provides better conditions and pay.

The Navy plans to directly contact laid-off UK sailors to ask if they are interested in emigrating. A spokesman for the Aussie Navy said their UK counterparts were happy for them to “put out their feelers”.

Those moving to Australia can normally only apply for citizenship after two years of permanent residence is granted, but this can be reduced to only three months for military personnel, according to WorkPermit.com.

The new recruitment drive in the UK is the biggest to date, although Aussie officials have previously looked to New Zealand, Canada and the US to increase their numbers. The Australian Navy already boasts around 16,000 permanent personnel as well as 2,000 reserves, but could take on as many as 1,000 sailors from the UK.
